Russell is a bird dog in all sense of the word. He loves anything that flies or even walks – if it’s covered in feathers. So that being said, Russell cannot be in a home that has birds inside or out or neighbors with visible birds. He has retired from hunting but hasn’t lost that instinct.
Inside the house, he is an easy going guy and will hang with his people looking for an occasional scratch or hug. But outside his prey instinct kicks in, so look out squirrels or bunnies! He gets along well with his foster brother who is half his size, they will run and play together and give each other kisses. Russell likes toys and balls, he especially loves to see what the squeakers look like in soft toys and really enjoys rubber toys that hold treats. He is working on his leash skills and responds to commands especially well when he thinks he will be rewarded, consistency is the key. His very active nose with be evident on walks – if allowed he will lead the way sniffing for critters.
He likes other spaniels so would be a good companion for another dog.
Russell came into rescue because he was allowed to roam free but when he moved to another city, his bird hunting instincts were not welcomed by the neighbors. He is a genuine springer in all the sense of being a Velcro guy who loves his people, but he isn’t a high maintenance dog that needs constant attention. Everyone comments on his handsomeness, even with the ‘summer cut’ he received from his last owners. If you are looking for a big teddy bear that wants someone to love and still has a lot of bounce in his step, Russell wants the job! He just turned 10 at the beginning of the year….but he is very active.
